Black Box Spatial brings together a range of experiences in many aspects of spatial operations including but not restricted to: forestry, horticulture, viticulture, mining, waste management and local government. Coming originally from user backgrounds, the Black Box people know how difficult, time-consuming and money-hungry spatial data management can be. Their accumulated knowledge and experience helps them to design and build systems that are creative, pragmatic and cost effective. Their objective is to help clients to leverage already powerful technologies in a logical and user friendly manner.

Stuart Bell
As the chief executive officer, Stuart looks after the daily direction of the business but is also responsible for analyzing client needs and consequent systems design. Stuart has a BSc in Geology from the University of Auckland and is a Sun-certified Java developer, a certified ESRI trainer and an authorized MicroImages agent. His career path has included positions with Highlake Exploration Ltd, (Australia), Frontier Mapping Pty Ltd (Australia), Rayonier Inc, Eagle Technology Ltd, followed by more senior level roles at Frontier Mapping (NZ) Ltd and its outgrowth Frontier Global Ltd. He is familiar with a wide range of desktop mapping, GIS and database systems and he has accumulated a broad experience in field data collection and desktop mapping (mining, forestry and horticulture sectors); GIS management (forestry, GIS consulting and software support) and systems design and development (GIS management and consulting).
Anna Schinkel
As GIS Team Leader Anna manages technical workflow and is a key influence on the quality and robustness of Black Box’s output. Trained initially as an electronics technician, Anna moved into the GIS field with studies at the Canberra Institute of Technology (Spatial Information Services) followed by various spatial-data related papers at Northern Territory University, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and the University of Southern Queensland. After accumulating a wide experience over eleven years in state government (Australia) and local authority offices (Australia and New Zealand) she joined Stuart Bell at Frontier Mapping Ltd and subsequently into Black Box Spatial.
Tony Chambers
Tony is responsible for both the development team output and management of the internal IT systems. Tony was originally trained in freight logistics and spent a number of years with courier and freight companies before undertaking a BSc (Statistics) degree and a post-graduate DipSci (Computer Science and GIS) at the University of Auckland. He joined Stuart and Anna at Frontier Global Ltd in a dual role as IT manager and GIS developer, and then joined them in setting up the Black Box Spatial operation.
Emma Luke
As Financial Controller Emma not only manages the accounts of Black Box but also has a key role in liaising with clients and managing contracts. Emma has a strong background in both large and small commercial office operations. Emma is also currently working part-time towards a Bachelor of Business degree.
Governance
There are currently three directors on the Black Box Board. The Chairman is Bruce Bell a geologist with many years experience both as a geo-spatial data driven operations manager and as a public company director in both Australia and New Zealand. He is a Member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand. Stuart Bell is the Managing Director and Chris James, another experienced company director takes a non-executive role. Both Bruce and Chris are directors of Selwyn Geosurveys Ltd., the sole shareholder of Black Box.
The board is updated monthly and meets quarterly or otherwise as required to review operations and ongoing strategic direction.
